In 1979 IKEA has created its first BILLY, “the world’s most versatile bookcase” as the brand says.

Its idea was developed by Gillis Lundgren, which also invented the famous flat packaging concept with Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA.

This year IKEA created many things to celebrate the 30th anniversary. It launched the BILLY movie, limited edition bookcases with qouts from William Shakespeare’s love sonnets, a mini-site and an online-collection of users’ interiors .

Now, it’s a time to sing. Of course, about BILLY:

It should be marked that the brand celebrates not only the date, but also 41 million BILLY bookcases have been made and sold since 1979. If you laid them all out in a line, the line would be over 70 000 kilometres long. That’s a distance equivalent to almost twice around the world at the equator.
