Seven Starbucks stores collect their paper coffee cups and combine them with old corrugated cardboard (OCC) for recycling. Why is this OCC needed?
As it is known, these paper coffee cups are covered with a thin polyethylene plastic coating which prevents liquid leakages, but makes their recycling difficult. But, it seems, specialists from the Western Michigan University found the decision – with a help of OCC, the most extensively recycled material in the United States.
It should be marked, that this program has big prospects:
Only in USA 58 billion paper cups are used every year. If all these cups were recycled, it could be an equivalent of removing 450 000 passenger cars from the road.
