According to “Women, Science and Success: The New Face of Innovation”, a survey conducted by L’Oreal and Opinion Research, 74% of Americans believe that women are underrepresented in science-related fields and 65% of adults cannot name a single famous female scientist.

L’Oreal found that 48% of respondents think USA lags behind other countries in investing in scientific research and science-related fields while nearly 95% agree that scientific research and development is a key factor for prosperity.

Also, people say women's participation in scientific research and development is very important:

For example, 97% of being surveyed believe, that women are capable of making significant contributions to scientific research, development and discovery while 59% of respondents note, that an underrepresentation of women in science-related fields could hinder the economic growth of the country.

As for L’Oreal, the brand has its own program of grants for women researchers.

The survey “Women, Science and Success: The New Face of Innovation” was conducted for L'Oreal USA by Opinion Research. 1 000 Americans were interviewed in April 2009.
